Reform

common sense solutions

Meridian is building a network of grassroots community activists who affect change on the local level throughout Pennsylvania. Our members have an opportunity to make a real impact on the nationally-important issues that our political leaders have failed to address on our behalf.

Currently, Meridian is working with local residents and organizations on several safety initiatives. We are also supporting election reforms that will give Pennsylvania residents a true voice on a local and state level. As Meridian and its members seek to make a positive difference, we will look for other innovative organizations to work with to help improve our communities.

See below for who we are working with and what we’ve done so far.

COMMON SENSE GUN safety

We believe in and respect the Second Amendment right to bear arms. That being said, no right is absolute and we encourage gun safety laws that protect Americans.

Meridian founded Common Sense Gun Safety in PA Schools and members coordinated a community-wide effort to pass the area’s most comprehensive Gun Safety Resolution by the Rose Tree Media School District in April 2018. Among other things, the resolution supports legislation to implement universal background checks, institute an assault weapons ban, and dismiss dangerous schemes to arm teachers. Meridian believes schools should push for common sense gun reform and show legislators the majority of residents support these initiatives. Learn how to pass your own school resolution our guide below.

We break down the steps to organizing your group, drafting a resolution (customizable sample documents included) and strategies to approaching your school board.

election REFORM

Illogical electoral redistricting (ie. gerrymandering) corrupts the principle of “one person, one vote” and erodes our voice in the democratic process.

Meridian supports Fair Districts PA in its citizen-led initiative to end partisan gerrymandering in Pennsylvania. In 2018, members of Fair Districts PA and Meridian worked together to help pass a Redistricting Reform Resolution in Middletown Township, Pennsylvania. See the wonderful presentation from Fair Districts PA!

In addition to ending partisan gerrymandering in Pennsylvania, Meridian also supports the following electoral reform initiatives: instituting open primaries; ending straight-party voting; and implementing ranked choice voting.
