FOREIGN POLICY

The United States has a strategic obligation to engage with the world and confront the challenges facing the U.S. and its allies. American leadership has guided us through many troubling times and has helped position the U.S. as the strongest military and economy in the world. While guarding against the risks of unnecessary foreign entanglements, the U.S. should continue to promote its core values of democracy, civil liberties and free markets throughout the world.

The U.S. needs to support its intelligence services wholeheartedly and work with other nations to share intelligence. We should also combat emerging threats through financial, military, educational and food aid to other countries.  This helps build strong foundations to avoid civil unrest and reduce the chance of terrorism.

The U.S. should actively promote its interests throughout the world and use its financial might to promote American values. If we can convince more countries to embrace democracy and civil liberties and free markets through our actions and our successes, the U.S. will live in a safer world.

In addition to emerging threats, the U.S. faces known challenges in all regions of the world. These dangers come from both traditional sources (ie. nation-states) and from non-traditional actors (ie. terrorist groups). The challenges take a variety of forms that can range from political issues to environmental issues. Confronting these challenges will require the U.S. to fully support rules-based institutions that have helped create a network of like-minded democracies.

In order to further the above goals, the U.S. should pursue the following agenda:

  • Fully support NATO and the countries that are part of NATO.

  • Remain engaged with the United Nations and utilize the U.N. to rally other countries around initiatives that help serve U.S. interests.

  • Refine U.S. military power to become more nimble in dealing with the threats and challenges of the 21st century so that we can quickly project power where needed throughout the world.

  • Utilize strong sanctions to punish countries such as North Korea and Iran for violating nuclear arms agreements.

  • Strongly support the territorial integrity of our allies and utilize sanctions and other means necessary to discourage such actions. This includes Russian sanctions for their illegal annexation of Crimea and continued military support of Ukrainian rebels.

  • Diplomatic engagement with China on numerous fronts such as resolving territorial questions in the South China Sea, stopping North Korea’s nuclear ambitions, and fully opening Chinese markets to U.S. companies.
